St. Joseph was formed as a mission of Saint Mary Star of the Sea in the 1950’s at the location of the current offices at Cordier Hall. In the 1980’s, as the congregation expanded, a church was built across the street. Until 2011 and the creation of the Pensinsula Cluster, Saint Joseph parish was administered by The Redemptorists.

St. Mary Star of the Sea is the ninth oldest parish in the Diocese of Richmond and the oldest Catholic parish on the Peninsula. It also holds a unique distinction, it is the only diocesan church in the nation located on a military installation, and its upkeep is solely funded by parishioner contributions.
